New North East UTC principal hails ‘vibrant city’ and ‘truly outstanding’ facilities
North East Futures University Technical College (UTC) has appointed its principal designate ahead of its grand opening to the first cohort of Year 10 and Year 12 students in September 2018.
Daniel Sydes is the first appointment made at the school which is specifically aimed at 14-19-year-olds and has a strong focus on digital technology and health science subjects.
Formerly vice principal at UTC Reading, Mr Sydes has made the move up North with his young family after impressing the trustees during the careful recruitment process.
Located at the Stephenson Quarter, the UTC will accommodate 600 students with applications now open.
The £12.5m development will also create 40 teaching jobs and 20 supplementary jobs in the city.
Forthcoming opportunities for parents and pupils to meet Mr Sydes are by appointment on Saturday, 25th November at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and at the next open evening on Thursday, 7th December at NBS, The Old Post Office, Newcastle.
He said: “I was absolutely delighted when I heard I had got the job. I love Newcastle, it’s such a vibrant city and the people are as friendly as everyone says.
“The new UTC is going to be a fantastic addition to the current educational landscape here. We held an open evening in September and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
“I think its central Newcastle location and cutting-edge facilities are helping the UTC stand out and we’ve already had a lot of registrations and interest.
“The facilities are truly outstanding with state-of-the-art laboratories and inspiring teaching spaces, areas for informal networking and collaboration, presentation facilities, and digitally supported studios for games development, fabrication, robotics and design.”
