Tennis champion Andy Murray backs two tech startups on Seedrs
British tennis player, Andy Murray has backed two more early-stage businesses as part of his strategic relationship with Seedrs.
Today (December 6), Murray is to invest undisclosed amounts into innovative UK tech companies, GoodBox and ZoomDoc. Each of the startups’ sectors, the charity space and healthtech, are said to be ripe for disruption.
Murray has an extensive charitable background, having worked closely with charities including Unicef, WWF, United for Wildlife and Malaria No More.
He commented: “These two businesses provide innovative, much needed solutions. GoodBox has the potential to revolutionise the way we donate to charity, they’re already working with many trusted organisations such as Comic Relief.
“I’ve been involved in the digital health space for a while now, primarily getting schools focused on creating digital solutions for health problems, so ZoomDoc interested me. The company has shown impressive growth and feedback since its soft-launch.”
Zoomdoc, founded by NHS GP Dr. Kenny Livingstone, is an on-demand service designed by general practitioners and allows users to instantly book a fully-qualified GP to arrive at their preferred location within a one-hour time slot. The company has reached £300k so far on Seedrs.
Kenny Livingstone, founder of ZoomDoc, said: “We are over the moon to have Andy Murray invest in ZoomDoc’s crowdfunding campaign. ZoomDoc is at the beginning of its journey, so to have a frequent early-stage investor and tennis legend like Andy back us is very exciting.”
GoodBox has also received backing from the tennis player. The business harnesses contactless technology to ensure the UK’s adoption of new and innovative fintech products does not have a detrimental effect on charities, who traditionally rely on cash donations.
The startup has raised £1.38m on the platform in two weeks, and Murray has joined the round alongside PNFT Social & Community Investments.
Andrew O’Brien, co-founder of GoodBox, added: “The GoodBox team are thrilled to welcome Andy Murray as a shareholder. Andy is well known for not just his legendary tennis status, but also the generous dedication of both his time and resources to the charity sector.
“He is a perfect match for a business like ours, and we look forward to continuing our mission to transform the giving landscape.”
