BG Engineering Invests In Workforce of the Future

Chesterfield based BG Engineering, a specialist subcontractor for machined components, has expanded its team and manufacturing facility, with the appointment of two new apprentices and a £75,000 investment in a new apprentice machine cell.

Investing in the workforce of the future and helping to reduce the level of skill shortages within the sector, BG Engineering has appointed Rhys Quinn and Dylan Davenport as Apprentice Machinists.

Rhys and Dylan will both work towards gaining a Level 3 BTEC in Mechanical Engineering. As part of the apprenticeship programme, Rhys attends vocational lessons at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Catcliffe and Dylan studies at Chesterfield College.

The new apprentice machine cell incorporates both manual and CNC capabilities, which will be used to train Rhys and Dylan in traditional machining, lathe and milling techniques.

Shane Greveson, Business Development Director at BG Engineering, said: “There has been a recognised decline in our industry over the past 20 years in the number of skilled machinists and so we took the decision a couple of years ago to employ our own apprentices. Our apprenticeship programme is working well and now has four staff on it, each of which is mentored by one of our more experienced machinists. We are delighted to welcome Rhys and Dylan and look forward to supporting them through their apprenticeship to become fully skilled engineers.”

He adds: “We have made a significant investment in the apprentice machining cell too. This means that they can learn both the traditional practical machining skills, plus working with the latest CNC technology, giving them an all-round experience of all the techniques they will need in their role.”

In addition to this latest investment, BG Engineering is also working towards securing the necessary accreditation (AS9100:2015) to become an approved aerospace supplier and will also offer its services to OEMs in very specialised areas.

Achieving the rigorous standards required of suppliers to the aerospace and nuclear markets, will enable BG Engineering to secure more opportunities in the sector, attract further business and create further employment opportunities for people living in the region.
