Champions! Local housebuilder helps martial arts group’s success at World Championships

Following Barratt Developments Yorkshire West’s recent sponsorship of Barnsley based Modern Martial Arts, the team is celebrating gold and silver medal wins at the recent World Karate and Kickboxing Championships in Portugal.

Continuing its support of the communities in which it builds, Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, provided Modern Martial Arts with the necessary funds to help the team on its way to the championships. The Modern Martial Arts Society, which is close to David Wilson Homes’ St John’s Walk development in Hoylandswaine, Barnsley, is a training facility teaching martial arts to anyone from the age of three years old.

The team is celebrating tremendous success at the World Championships, with members Christine Johnson winning gold in both the Open Kata and Ladies Veterans Kata; and Erin Longfield achieving gold in the Under 13 Girls Novice Kata and Silver in the Under 13 Girls Kata. The World Championships were held in Albufeira in Portugal between 26th – 31st October 2017.

The team visited St John’s Walk before the championship, to receive the cheque for funding from Jayne Owen, Sales Adviser, and Gavin McCarthy, Sales Manager, at the development.

Sarah Moss, Chief Instructor at Modern Martial Arts (MMA), commented: “This was the first international competition for Christine and Erin and they both trained phenomenally hard throughout the year. We are really proud of them at MMA and they are great role models to the other students they train with and now teach. Christine is an assistant instructor and Erin is a Junior Leader and all of our students look up to them. We can’t thank Barratt Developments Yorkshire West enough for their help in getting the team to the championships and giving the girls a chance to win these well deserved medals!”

Gavin commented: “We are so pleased to have not only helped the team at MMA reach the World Championships, but to come home with medals! It demonstrates the brilliant part they play in the local community, and we hope their success continues into the New Year.” St John’s Walk is a beautiful countryside development of four and five bedroom homes, located in the sought after village of Hoylandswaine. Homes are available to purchase from £386,995.
