Smart meter training centre launches in Runcorn
A new smart meter training facility with plans to upskill hundred of engineers has opened in Runcorn.
From its base on Sarus Court, COSAC wants to train as many as 200 smart meter engineers within its first year.
The centre has capacity to provide training and assessment courses for up to 48 trainees at any given time.
COSAC said its launch supports a nationwide move to upgrade energy supplies, tackle climate change and overhaul an “ageing energy system”, through which the Government is aiming to ensure all UK homes have a smart meter by 2020.
It is hoped the rollout will give people more control over their energy usage.
COSAC MD Andy Mason said: “There’s no doubt that achieving the Government’s ambitious target is a mammoth task.
“With over 50 million gas and electricity meters in need of changing in less than three years, the demand for smart meter engineers has never been more acute.”
He continued: “As a result, there’s no doubt that energy suppliers across the UK will be feeling the strain of battling a race against time to upskill their engineers to qualified smart meter engineers, but we’re here to help ease the burden.”
Outside its 12-week smart meter training offer, COSAC also provides one- to five-day classroom programmes and online self-study courses for the construction, utilities and retail sectors.
