Newcastle Quayside to receive brand new seven-storey hotel creating 80 jobs

Plans to build a modern four-star hotel on Newcastle Quayside have been announced.

Meliá Hotels, a Spanish hotel operator, is aiming to open a seven-storey venue next to the new Travelodge. This is part of plans to see the demolition of the former BT office east wing in Bridge Court.

Landowners Union Property Development Limited (LUPD), a Tyneside-based property group, wants to make way for the 161-bed hotel - which Meliá Hotels International would run under its Innside brand. The company already has Innside hotels in London and Manchester.

FaulknerBrowns, Killingworth-based architects, have submitted documents with Lambert Smith Hampton to Newcastle City Council, outlining the plans.

FaulknerBrowns said: “Delivering this new hotel will revitalise an area of the Quayside that has remained largely vacant since 2011.

“With refurbishment works to the west block into a Travelodge Hotel now complete, this second hotel will bring the entire site back into use and breathe life into this prominent but underused riverside site.

“Bringing the entire site back into use with two hotels has great potential, not only in breathing life back into the western end of Newcastle’s quayside, but also in providing a link between the redevelopment of the nearby Stephenson Quarter, the Quayside and beyond.”

It is said that 80 jobs would be created at the hotel once it is complete. The site has been vacant since 2011 when BT moved out.

FaulknerBrowns continued: “Meliá are keen to expand their UK portfolio, and consider the prime location of the River View site on Newcastle’s quayside an exciting opportunity to introduce their ‘Innside by Meliá’ brand to the North East.

“On entering the hotel, visitors can expect to enter into a lively and vibrant space with self check-in terminals and the bar and restaurant all visible and immediately accessible. Non-residents are encouraged to use amenities, a natural extension to the public realm, and an attractive new destination in the city.

“Meliá Hotels International have demonstrated a willingness to maintain a lasting presence and commitment to the city of Newcastle by signing a 25-year lease agreement on the proposed building, subject to gaining planning approval.”
