Newcastle bar introduces third gluten-free beer
A LEADING North East bar is making life even easier for its coeliac visitors after introducing a third gluten-free beer.
City Tavern at Northumberland Road, Newcastle, has added a further craft ale by Autumn Brewing Co to it its ever-expanding drinks menu.
Last year, the multi-award-winning pub became one of the first in the country to stock the Seaham-based brewery’s ALTernative BREWing range, offering its Bavarian-style Pilsner and English pale ale to drinkers.
Now it has decided to expand its selection further, and has added ALT BREW NO.03, a dark roast stout, to its menu.
It joins not only the other two beers, but also a large selection of gluten-free dishes currently available at the city centre pub, owned by businessman David King.
“We are very passionate about our gluten-free menu and last year we decided we needed a suitable beer for our coeliac guests,” he said.
“We introduced the first two ales from the Autumn Brewing Co’s ALT BREW collection, and they’ve been really popular.
“Thanks to their success and the demand, we’ve decided to bring in the third ale, which is a darker stout and I think it’s going to be very popular with our regular coeliac visitors.
“Gluten-free is something that all bars and restaurants are taking very seriously now, and I’m pleased that we are able to continue to lead the way.”
The gluten-free food options available at the bar include fish and chips in tempura batter, hot roast Northumbrian beef in a gluten/wheat free baguette and a gooey flourless chocolate brownie served with Beckleberry’s vanilla ice cream.
City Tavern has been owned by Mr King since 2014, and he has invested £450k to refurbish the historic venue, transforming it into one of the city’s most luxurious bars.
