Lancashire control system firm acquires London business

A Lancashire-based supplier of control systems for automatic doors has snapped up a parking security firm in London.

Nelson business North Valley Metal (NVM) acquired APT Security Systems after securing a six-figure debt funding package from EV SME Loans and Lancashire Rosebud Finance, both run by Mercia Fund Managers.

The deal will give NVM a presence in the South and open up a new market for its product range.

The company was founded in 1966 and today operates across three sites in Nelson. Applications for its electric control systems include industrial doors, garage doors and automated gate and entrance systems.

John Seymour, managing director at NVM, took over the business in 2008 following the retirement of the founder.

He has since focused on expanding the business and introducing new technologies and products. NVM acquired Portico, a similar business based in West Bromwich, in 2015.

APT Security Systems was established in 1962 and provides vehicle access control and traffic management systems. The firm was previously part of the Austria-based multinational Swarco AG. It employs a team of 12.

Mercia Fund Managers investment manager Chris Carter commented: “Both NVM and APT Security are long-established brand names and leading players in their industries.

“This acquisition will further strengthen the profile of NVM and give it the ability to offer its products and services across the country through its presence in three locations along the ‘spine’ of England.”

Chris added: “It allows NVM to supply roller parts and gear mechanisms for APT’s products, and gives both companies a wider product range to offer their existing customers.”

County Cllr Tim Ashton, chairman of Lancashire County Developments Ltd (LCDL), the county council’s economic development company, said of Lancashire Rosebud Finance’s involvement in the deal: “Thanks to [our] finance and support, coupled with Mercia’s backing, we’re able to bring these two companies together in ways that will expand their reach, offer new services and build their business even further.

“This is good news for Lancashire and supports our manufacturing expertise.”

Jenny Goodwin of law firm Farleys provided legal advice to NVM. Isabelle Inskip, from Weightmans, acted for Mercia Fund Managers.

The acquisition brought NVM’s groupwide headcount to more than 30.
