North Liverpool ‘dumping ground’ set for cleanup and new lease of life
Industrial units in North Liverpool that burned down last year are due to be revitalised by regeneration firm Mees Group.
New plans will see the former waste recycling plant operated by Spot Mix Ltd, which burned for days when it caught fire last August, cleaned up and transformed into a skip yard.
Thomas Mee, chief exec of Mees Group, said of the project: “This site is in a real poor state currently and has become a dumping ground in Bootle.
“We are keen to get started as soon as possible and clear the tons and tons of rubbish and fire damaged building debris.”
He added: “Bringing this two-acre site back into operation is a key project for the group this year. North Liverpool’s regeneration is key to the city moving forward and we are proud to be a part of this.”
The cleanup and build project is due to begin in March. Mees Group is expecting the facility to be operational within six months.
A section of Hawthorne Road was closed during the fire, affecting local traders.
Discussing the extent of the cleanup, Thomas said: “The site was used as a waste processing plant prior to its closure and as such not only contained the waste associated with fire damage but also every category of household waste.
There are literally hundreds of tons of infested waste to be removed which had been made worse by ‘fly tipping’ during the sites closure. The exercise of cleaning up this site will be managed in a manner which causes the least public disturbance and has the net effect of improving the local environment.“
