North Liverpool’s £7m fruit and veg market to open this week

A multi-million pound fruit, vegetable and flower market is launching in Liverpool this week.

The city’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, will officially open the facility in Gillmoss on Wednesday (February 7).

Spanning 80,000 sq ft, the market has replaced a rundown building off Edge Lane that will be transformed into a Merseyside Police patrol hub.

Nine acres of the land, fronting Prescot Road, will become housing. Part will be used to rebuild the neighbouring St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School.

The market has onsite parking and will eventually include a café. It is the latest phase of a market investment programme that has so far delivered an overhauled Great Homer Street in Everton and a £2.5m refurb of St Johns Market in the city centre.

Lord Mayor Cllr Malcolm Kennedy said: “I am delighted to be opening this brand new market, which was much needed.

“It is great news for the traders who have been waiting a long time for the creation of an attractive new development with modern facilities.”

Liverpool City Council said the borrowing to fund the construction of the new market will be paid for through rental income from the market traders.

Cllr Ann O’Byrne, Deputy Mayor of Liverpool, commented: “This move has been vital to giving the market a future; their previous home was over 50 years old and the new conditions are a world apart.

“The workers are unsung heroes whose work is done while many of us are sleeping and we were determined to make sure they found a new site so it didn’t just wither on the vine.”
