London engineering company acquires Carillion’s UK power framework business

North London engineering and construction firm J. Murphy & Sons Limited has acquired Carillion’s UK power framework business.

The deal, completed for an undisclosed sum, will see the company take over the construction giant’s position on National Grid framework contracts covering overhead electricity lines, substation and underground cables.

J. Murphy & Sons will also become the new joint venture partner of Swedish infrastructure services business Eltel on overhead line and T-Pylon framework contracts.

Law firm Addleshaw Goddard, which advised J. Murphy & Sons on the transaction, said 22 Carillion employees will join the firm.

Carillion fell into liquidation last month. At the time of the collapse, it had around 19,500 UK employees and debts of £1.3bn.

The government’s official receiver (OR), appointed to handle the liquidation, is sorting through the hundreds of contracts that Carillion was managing in the hope of arranging alternative contractors to deliver them.

Among the contracts is the construction of the new £335m Royal Hospital in Liverpool.

So far, the OR has made 829 Carillion staff redundant and saved around 1,019 jobs.

The North West corporate team at Addleshaw Goddard acted for J. Murphy & Sons.

Corporate partner Shelley McGivern led the team, which included Joanne Cooper.
