Visitor Attraction Jarrow Hall recruiting after securing substantial Heritage Lottery Award
Jarrow Hall – Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum has secured a £59,900 Resilient Heritage grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help safeguard the visitor attraction’s long term future.
The funding in part has enabled the commissioning of a heritage and visitor attraction expert who will lead on developing an overarching resilience master plan to ensure the potential of the 11 acre heritage site is fully realised and to safeguard its future.
Community focused social enterprise Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle (STAN) took on responsibility for Jarrow Hall in October 2016 with the official launch in April 2017.
The new role is also part-funded by the Esmée Fairburn Collections Fund (run by the Museums Association).
The successful individual, when they are appointed as Programme Lead (Culture and Heritage), will work with Operations Manager Groundwork STAN (Culture and Heritage) Leigh Venus, responsible for the direction and development of the site. Applications are being taken now for the exciting new role up until 15 February 2018, with interviews conducted on 21 to 23 February.
Leigh Venus said: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this Resilient Heritage Funding from the Heritage Lottery as it underlines our commitment to build on our work over our first year here at Jarrow Hall and continuing to reinforce the foundations of a strong future for the site.
“Thanks to National Lottery players this funding has allowed us to open a tender for external expertise to develop our masterplan and guide us towards realising our long term vision for the site. The successful applicant will analyse infrastructure, site facilities, opportunities for developing education and community engagement packages, and the interpretation of heritage and learning opportunities across the Jarrow Hall. Funds will also support training for staff and volunteers in heritage skills.
“The Programme Lead role that we are recruiting for now will ideally see us bringing in someone with experience in the museums or cultural sector; but more importantly we are really looking for an individual to demonstrate exceptional drive, ideas and energy as there is scope to really make this highly visible role their own.
“This award and the new role will really help to support and protect what is an indelible and irreplaceable part of the North East’s historic and cultural fabric.”
Across 11-carefully-managed acres, Jarrow Hall tells the fascinating story of Bede – the Father of English History – and the incredible world of Anglo-Saxon England. The museum has so far welcomed over 5,000 school children for live-enhancing education activities, and tens of thousands of visitors from the local community and beyond.
Jarrow Hall is managed and operated by Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle in partnership with South Tyneside Council and supported by Port of Tyne. Port of Tyne is a major northern gateway, which adds over £710 million to the North East England’s economy supporting over 14,000 jobs each year, and is proud to support local community projects across the region.
Prior to the launch the site saw significant investment to bring the museum and grounds up to a safe standard for visitors to enjoy. This included key works to the homes for the many animals who live on the farm, as well as critical building works to create classrooms for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities.
