Care home teams up with nursery to promote friendship

A Withernsea care home has teamed up with a local nursery to encourage engagement and friendship.

Tamarix Lodge will welcome children from School House Nursery and provide regular activities for the residents and students to take part in together. The care home is operated by not for profit organisation Hica Group, which runs a portfolio of 15 homes across Hull and East Riding.

The newly formed partnership will see residents visit the nursery, and some of the children will also visit residents at Tamarix Lodge. They will be taking part in a range of creative group activities, including exercise classes, crafts and singing.

Penni Brown, chief executive of Hica Group said: “The partnership is a great example of how to bridge the gap between young children and older people. It is a fantastic idea, which will be hugely beneficial to both the residents and the children at School House Nursery.

“Activities such as these are really important to our residents as they encourage community engagement and interaction with different people and age groups. Activities across Hica Group are always planned to suit their individual needs as well as support mental and physical health and wellbeing.”

The partnership has already received support from the local community, including the children’s parents.

Carole Martin, owner of School House Nursery, said: “We are passionate at bridging the gap between younger and older people. We have had a great deal of experience of intergenerational partnerships and it’s clear to see the positive benefits it brings to both the children and the Tamarix Lodge residents.”

Alison Bedford, manager of Tamarix Lodge said: “The partnership between Tamarix Lodge and School House Nursery is something which our residents are really excited about.

“In addition to building up a friendship between the residents and children, activities like this really encourage residents to engage and participate, as well as having fun. It will be great to see the ongoing benefits that this partnership will have on our residents. “
