School book donation

Young bookworms at a County Durham primary school now have even more to read following a donation by a housing association.

In December, children from Cestria Primary School in Chester-le-Street sang to people attending Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association’s (DAMHA) annual residents’ forum.

They made such an impression that, to show its gratitude, DAMHA subsequently donated £50 to the school.

The money has been used to buy books for the school.

Year 2 Teacher Jayne Behenna said: “The children really enjoyed singing to the residents and then handing out Christmas cards they had made.

“The donation from DAMHA was very kind and we have bought some new reading books for both of our Year 2 classrooms, and also for reading books which go home weekly with the children.”

Helen Sinden, DAMHA’s Operations Manager, said: “Our head office in Chester-le-Street is very close to the school so we thought it would be nice for the children to come and sing at our residents’ forum.

“It is always one of the highlights of the morning for our residents, so we wanted to thank the school by making a donation.

“We are pleased the children are enjoying the books and we hopefully look forward to welcoming the school to sing again at the end of this year”
