Apprentices help to grow North East business

A national waste management company has pledged to support jobs for young people in the North East with the creation of new apprentice opportunities.

CSG, the UK’s leading supplier of specialist waste management solutions, has offered two technical apprenticeships to young employees at its growing oil reclamation business on Teesside – and has pledged to create more roles across its growing business.

Jen Cartmell, operations manager at CSG Teesside, said: “Recent news reports painted a bleak picture for job prospects in the North East, especially if the region is adversely affected by Brexit*.

“We are proud to provide secure, long-term careers within an industry that offers more opportunities for training and development than the public might imagine.

“Our apprenticeships give young people the chance they need to develop their skills and achieve good qualifications, all while earning a wage at the same time.

“We now have a total of seven employees following apprenticeship schemes and we aim to steadily increase that number in all areas of our business.”

The two new apprentices – Connor Pryke and Joe Ferguson, both from Middlesbrough – will train as process operators and join youngsters already working in CSG’s service and maintenance and driving departments who are combining external and workplace training leading to approved technical qualifications.

They follow in the footsteps of Craig Dufferwiel, who has progressed from site chemist to the role of Regional Business Manager at CSG Teesside.

Craig added: “I’ve been developed through internal and external training, as well as job shadowing. I constantly look for how we can empower our people to help grow the business. We encourage a culture where everybody looks to develop everybody else.”

CSG’s Middlesbrough site employs 14 people, delivering a range of waste treatment and recycling services including oil and water treatment, chemical analysis and a wash plant for contaminated industrial rags.

The company operates more than 20 facilities across the UK, with a team of drivers, operatives and specialist consultants working together on the goal of diverting waste from landfill, recovering and recycling as much as possible.
