Flintshire chemicals plant helps hospice revamp patient bathroom

A hospice that provides free end of life care is to refurbish one of its bathrooms after receiving a £2,000 funding boost.

Wrexham-based Nightingale House Hospice is using a donation from Synthite, a chemical manufacturer in Mold, to revamp a patient care facility.

The money will be used to transform a bathroom so that it can better accommodate the needs of patients. The facility will be re-decorated and provide a wet room style shower and new toilet.

The wet room will particularly benefit patients with complex needs, and those who are less able and in wheelchairs.

Synthite was awarded the £2,000 by its parent company Tennants Consolidated Ltd, to donate to a local charity.

The business agreed to support Nightingale House Hospice as part of its on going support for charities in the local area.

Sister Kay Ryan, outpatient services co-ordinator at Nightingale House said: “We are very grateful to Synthite for this wonderful donation.

“There will be far more room to manoeuvre and the new layout will be of great additional benefit in meeting the personal needs of our patients.

“The hospice relies heavily on the support of the community and as such this contribution is very welcome and very much appreciated. Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved.”

Sarah Jones, assistant accountant at Synthite said: “As a company we’re proud to be supporting Nightingale House as it provides comfort to patients and their families during very difficult times.

“The new wet room is set to help patients and staff alike, and every penny of our donation will go towards it.”

Nightingale House provides specialist palliative care services for local people and their families affected by life-threatening or life-limiting illness.

Services include a 12-bed inpatient ward, a daycare unit, outpatient clinic, occupational therapy, complementary therapies, physiotherapy including a hydrotherapy pool and an ambulance service.

A range of bereavement support services are also offered including a specialist service for children and young adults.

Synthite has operated from Alyn Works, Denbigh Road, Mold, since the 1950s. It employs 120 people.

Its main product is formaldehyde, a basic building block of the chemical industry. Formaldehyde is used in the manufacture of a vast array of everyday goods, ranging from furniture, floorboards and interior trim for motor vehicles.
