Nasty Women launch International Art Prize

Last year over 700 artists from around the world took part in the sell-out “Nasty Women” exhibition in New York, a fundraiser for women’s health charities. Later in the year a group of Newcastle based artists and curators hosted their very own version “Nasty Women Newcastle”, which attracted over 2,500 visitors and raised more than £3,000 for local women’s and LGBTQ+ charities.

Named after the Trump slur to Clinton during presidential debates “Nasty Women” offers artists (and others) the opportunity to be involved in a visual protest against the Trump administration whilst raising money for women’s and LGBTQ+ organisations.

This sparked a series of Nasty Women events throughout the UK with hundreds of artists from all over the world giving their time and work to the Nasty Women cause.

It’s estimated that the movement has raised half a million dollars for Planned Parenthood and other women’s & LGBTQ+ charities so far.

This year Nasty Women organisers wanted to create an opportunity to celebrate those artists who were involved, and so, to mark International Women’s Day last week, The Nasty Women International Art Prize was launched.

Says Lady Kitt, artist and one of the Founders of Nasty Women North East: “The prize is a collaboration between Nasty Women groups in New York, Amsterdam, London and Portugal and is being co-ordinated by Nasty Women North East with the aim of recognising and rewarding ‘Nastiness’ in art and activism. We would LOVE to encourage as many artists as possible to enter and be showcased. “

“It’s an amazing opportunity for artists at any stage in their career to have their work seen by curators and gallerists around the world.”

Prizes for the winners and runners up are:

• Highly Commended awards for 25 artists* • Artist residency (for 4th runner up) at Ampersand Inventions, Newcastle upon Tyne • Cash prizes and opportunities to show work in UK, USA & the Netherlands (for top 3 finalists)

An exhibition of all the work submitted by the deadline of 11pm on 30 April 2018, will be held in Newcastle on June 21 at the PRAXIS Gallery on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne for the first round of judging where the work of every single artist who enters will be shown.
