DEMENTIA CHARITY HANDED £1,000 TO SUPPORT WORK IN REGION

Local dementia support workers have been handed £1,000 to support their efforts in the North East. The Alzheimer’s Society has been awarded the donation from Persimmon Homes Durham’s Community Champions fund, which sees two regional worthy causes awarded up to £1,000 each month. Lucy King, who made the application on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society in the region, said: “There are currently 35,000 people living with dementia in the North East of England and we are working hard to ensure they have the support they need. “We fund local dementia support workers who provide one-to-one advice and support for people with dementia from diagnosis onwards. Our side by side service works to pair volunteers with people with dementia to help combat loneliness and isolation and encourage them to continue doing the activities they love. “We also invest heavily in research with £1.5m being invested into research at Durham University and Newcastle University. “We would like to thank Persimmon Homes Durham for awarding us the Community Champions funding. We rely on donations to continue providing all of these vital services, as well as our national helpline, and can guarantee every penny will make the world of difference.” Christine Cooper, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Durham, said: “We’re so pleased to support the Alzheimer’s Society with their work. To hear that 35,000 people in our region are living with dementia is upsetting, especially when you consider how many family members are also affected. “This is exactly what our Community Champions scheme is all about, supporting good causes to make a positive change. We are pleased that we have been able to offer our support.”
