St George's Day should be a celebration of the English language

Today is the trifecta of language celebration, with it being the UN’s English Language Day, St. George’s Day, and the celebrated day for Shakespeare’s birthday.

Anthony Eyarhono, general manager and director at Rosetta Stone, reflects on why there could not be a better occasion to celebrate the power language can play in our lives.

“Language evolves and takes different shapes through time,” said Eyarhono. “The new words, phrases and slang that develop through the years offer a reflection to the day-to-day happenings of modern life. The English language has reach and influence far beyond its country of origin; it’s, unsurprisingly, the third most spoken language in the world.

He continued: “With the current political climate holding many questions – indeed, Brexit is looming – language should be seen as a unifying force, with the power to provide comfort, inspire, unite, and create meaningful connections. Furthermore, as the lingua franca of business, English has the unique power to cross cultural bridges and further broaden our horizons.”
