Engineering firm takes extra care with new contract wins in York

Leeds-based Adept is helping to engineer a sustainable future for a collection of buildings owned by the Joseph Rowntree Trust in the garden village of New Earswick in York. Appointed by two of the registered housing association and care provider’s contractors, Wates Residential North and Strategic Team Group, the Civil and Structural Consulting Engineering firm is providing a full range of engineering services for the £24m build of New Lodge – an extra care village development of 149 one and two bed apartments and care suites. The new development will replace the demolished care facility known as Red Lodge, and work on the foundations for the first of six new buildings is already underway. New Lodge is set to open in 2021. In addition to the accommodation, work on New Lodge includes a host of facilities and garden areas which will also be incorporated into the build to encourage people of all ages to become a part of the new community. Adept has also been instructed to provide civil and structural engineering services for the £1.5m refurbishment of the Folk Hall – a thriving centre in New Earswick which is used by community members, groups and businesses to host events. The redevelopment of Folk Hall will create a much enhanced resource for the community and alongside New Lodge, all of the public spaces and facilities in New Earswick, including the tennis courts will be improved. Richard Parker, from Adept, said: “Both these projects bring a number of engineering challenges. Due to the size and flat nature of the development site, we had to design a special 90m long Tubosider storage pipe to fit neatly into a narrow corridor to manage the volume of surface water onsite. The surface water drainage scheme has been modelled using specialist software to calculate flow rates and is then pumped to the public sewers. “The new buildings have been modelled using 3D software which has generated 3D views that have aided co-ordination with the site and design team, the buildings are also designed for future adaptability by minimising the number of internal loadbearing walls.” Craig Wood, Wates Residential North’s Project Manager at New Lodge, said: “We chose Adept as our partner on this important scheme because the firm has a proven track-record on both large scale new-build developments and refurbishment projects across the region. The attention to detail and collaborative approach provided by Adept will support a smooth build programme over the next few years as we all work together to deliver much needed care and community facilities in New Earswick.” The Joseph Rowntree Trust manages approximately 2,500 homes in Yorkshire and the North East, half of which are located in New Earswick. Adept was founded in 2007 by business partners, Erol Erturan, Matthew Ramsden and Richard Parker. It has an annual turnover of more than £2 million. Clients include a wide range of regional and national construction and development firms.
