80-year-old West Yorkshire cycle manufacturer enters liquidation

A historic cycle manufacturer, based in West Yorkshire, has entered voluntary liquidation.

Ellis Briggs Cycles Ltd, of Shipley, is the oldest custom-built frame builder in the UK.

The business’ bespoke frames have competed in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, the Tour de France and British National Championships.

Ellis Briggs Cycles was founded in 1936 by Mr Leonard Ellis and Mr Thomas Briggs.

It traded for 80 years before entering liquidation in 2016 when the business was bought by the current director.

On April 6th, 2018 the directors of Ellis Briggs Cycles passed an extraordinary resolution to wind-up the business and enter into a Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation (CVL).

Walsh Taylor, the insolvency practitioner and business recovery specialist, has been appointed to handle the liquidation of the assets of the company after it was unable to meet its debts.

As well as manufacturing and retailing bikes, Ellis Briggs also has a repair side of the business.
