Red House School ‘marries’ education with Royal Wedding fun

Pupils at a leading independent school in Teesside have taken Royal Wedding celebrations into their own hands with a fun-filled ceremony re-enactment.

Challenging their creative skills, the pupils at Red House School in Norton, Stockton-on-Tees designed and carried out a re-enactment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s long-anticipated wedding ceremony, with Lauren Shaw aged seven playing the part of the new Princess, and Johan Carter aged eight as the Prince.

Whilst learning about traditional British values, the children created buttonholes, fascinators and decorations, and a real wedding dress was provided by a parent, Mrs Bloomfield, to bring the production together.

Gill Summers, assistant head at the Nursery & Infant School said: “It’s been a wonderful event to celebrate with the children. We have extracted the maximum learning experiences and had the most fun in preparing for the wedding.

“The children have been honing their speech and drama skills ahead of the ceremony, to make the re-enactment as realistic as possible.

“It’s been a whole school activity for the Nursery & Infant School, with everyone taking the lead in some part of the production. It has been an enriching experience for both staff and pupils and coincided nicely with outdoor learning week.”

Materials for decorations and accessories were supplied by another parent, Mrs Davies, who was recently awarded an MBE for services to industry. Everything was planned down to the last detail, with the ‘happy couple’ even having a red carpet for their aisle.

Lauren, who played a convincing Megan Markle said: “I was so excited to be chosen and extremely honoured to play a member of the Royal Family … if only for one day. I was nervous but it was so much fun!”

The School continued the celebrations with afternoon tea followed by traditional British games.

Having previously celebrated the Queen’s Coronation and The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding, Red House School hope to continue revelling in British traditions in the future.
