Essex charity welcomes cash injection

A charity that supports people in Essex affected by sight loss will be able to extend its services thanks to a cash boost from a regional housebuilder.

The Blind and Sight Impaired Society (BASIS), who work across south Essex, has received £1,000 donation as part of Persimmon Homes Essex’s Community Champions initiative.

The scheme sees local charities and community groups across the region apply for up to £1,000 a month to match funds they have raised themselves.

BASIS has more than 500 members. The charity provides activity sessions for members, including crafts, sports and guide dog social groups, as well as providing a home visit service from specialist staff.

Michelle Thomson, from the charity, said: “We offer services to those affected by sight loss, from activity sessions to befriending schemes. People affected by sight loss can often feel isolated and we aim to help increase confidence and promote independent living.

“With the donation, we hope to extend our services to areas that are less accessible via public transport.

“The extra funds will enable our outreach workers to cover these areas and set up member social groups. We are extremely grateful to Persimmon Homes Essex for its support.”

The Community Champions initiative is a year-long programme that sees a national pot of cash shared across Persimmon Homes’ 30 regional businesses.

Phil Standen, managing director for Persimmon Homes Essex, said the Community Champions initiative was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works.

He said: “The Blind and Sight Impaired Society provides such a valuable service to so many people. It’s a cause we believe is a worthy winner of our monthly funding.

“We’ve made it really simple to apply for funding and we’re urging groups and charities to apply for next month’s donation by completing an online form.”

Persimmon Homes Essex is building across the region, with developments in Grays, Hockley, Heybridge, Harlow and St Albans.
