Proposals unveiled for redevelopment of 'historic' building in Sheffield

Plans have been submitted for the renovation, refurbishment and extension of the ‘Nichol’s Building’ on Shalesmoor roundabout in Sheffield.

As part of the plans, the former grocer’s warehouse will be developed with a new single storey extension and a seven-storey block to the south-west of the site.

The building will also be converted into a mixed-use scheme, comprising ground floor commercial space and mix of 48 studio, one and two-bedroomed residential units developed specifically for rental by a professional landlord.

The development lies within the Furnace Hill conservation area. The three-story Victorian frontage that faces onto Shalesmoor and Shepherd Street will be retained, and existing brickwork and sandstone features will be restored.

The new scheme will be renamed Nichols & Co in honour of the wholesalers who were once housed within the building.

Sheffield-based property developers Ashgate and HLM Architects submitted the plans.

Alex Cesarsky, project architect of HLM architects, said: “The development of the Nichol’s Building into high-quality residential and commercial space will support the further expansion of the city centre and Kelham Island, whilst our restoration will protect and preserve this historic building into the future.”

Matthew Jacques of Ashgate added: “Following the success of Kelham Island, Shalesmoor is set to become a highly desirable place to live. We at Ashgate are committed to bringing something special to the city and believe that Nichols and Co. will deliver on this as we have invested greatly in the design throughout.

“We are actively looking for tenants to fill the commercial units that will bring a sense of community to the area.”
