A RIGHT ROYAL STREET PARTY

A group of residents in Galashiels joined together to celebrate the most anticipated event of the year thanks to funding from a leading housebuilder. Local people living at Melrose Gait were delighted to receive £250 from Persimmon Homes East Scotland towards their post-wedding street party. The neighbours came together after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had tied the knot to celebrate the Royal nuptials in style starting proceedings with The Borders’ biggest ‘Meghan and spoon’ race. The street party, held in the aptly named Queen Elizabeth Square at Melrose Gait, was the first event of its kind to be organised at the growing new community designed and built by Persimmon Homes. Funds raised at the event will be donated to Radio Borders charity Cash for Kids. The event was the brainchild of residents Pauline Ward and Pamela Hamilton who both worked tirelessly to create a day to remember. Entertainment started at 2pm with special activities and competitions for the local children including a best dressed bride and soldier uniform, bouncy castle, craft stalls, and even a ‘guess the weight of the wedding cake’ competition.
Pupils at Langlee Primary School were asked to design their own bunting and banners to get them involved and help create the wedding atmosphere
The picnic style refreshments were provided by local residents with additional treats for the children including popcorn and candy floss stalls. Event organiser and resident Pauline Ward, said: “We felt that the Royal Wedding was a fantastic opportunity to hold a family-friendly event where we could meet our neighbours and create a real sense of community. “We are extremely grateful to Persimmon Homes for supporting the event and look forward to many more opportunities to use our beautiful new square. “We all had a wonderful day and congratulate Harry and Meghan on their marriage.” Managing director for Persimmon Homes East Scotland, Jim Kirkpatrick, said: “We’re proud to be part of the celebrations at Melrose Gait and hope that everyone enjoyed the party. “Our business is building homes but only the residents can create a genuine sense of community that turns neighbours into friends. “Melrose Gait is one of our award winning sites that has proved to be very popular amongst buyers and I have no doubt that events like this one will make the homes even more appealing.” Melrose Gait has a range of three, four and five-bedroom homes available with prices from £136,000.
