Liverpool FC to expand ‘entertainment opportunities’ Anfield Stadium
Liverpool FC have submitted two planning applications in the hope of expanding the use of Anfield Stadium beyond football.
The Reds are looking to make their home ground available for music concerts and non-football sporting and cultural events, under a plan to make Anfield a year-round destination for residents and visitors in the city.
If approved by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee, LFC could host as many as 10 concerts and other events each year, primarily outside the football calendar.
Sporting events could include boxing and American or Gaelic football. Anfield could also be used for screening a wider range of football matches, including Liverpool away games and international matches.
Anfield has been used for other events besides football in the past – including a Paul McCartney concert in 2008 and the Four Nations rugby league final in 2016.
In a statement on the LFC website, chief operating officer Andy Hughes said: “The plans we are bringing forward would provide the city’s residents with increased entertainment opportunities for music and sporting events whilst at the same time supporting Liverpool’s vision to attract more visitors to the city.
“Our proposals not only support the city’s ambitions, but showcase Anfield as a destination and will support local businesses and jobs in the area.”
The plans are due to be considered later this summer. If given the go-ahead, events could take place this year and concerts from May 2019.
