'Eco-friendly' car hire business opens milestone Newcastle branch

An environmentally friendly car hire firm has recruited a new franchisee in Newcastle marking a milestone 20th UK branch.

Green Motion has announced that the Newcastle branch will open to the public on Monday, June 11. The branch will be situated at Brunswick Industrial Estate, 10 minutes from Newcastle Airport.

Launched in 2007, the company was the first environmentally friendly rental option for road users and, 11 years on, this is the first branch to serve the North East.

Will Wynter, franchisee development manager, said: “We are very excited to be opening in Newcastle and our really looking forward to working with Mo, the new franchisee.

“Our customers are passionate about reducing emissions and it’s fitting that the new branch will be launched in the North East. Newcastle, in particular, is an area that is championing best practice in road emissions, so it’s a natural fit for us.”

The Newcastle City Council has recognised a growing demand for greener travel and is striving to provide a network that encourages the use of low-emission vehicles.

Aligning with the city’s plans, Green Motion plans to add some fully electric vehicles to its Newcastle fleet over the coming years.

The new branch will accommodate 30 cars and will be run by Mo Ikram, a lifelong Newcastle resident with experience in running other franchises in the city.

As well as offering low emission vehicles, Green Motion offset the remaining carbon produced from customer journeys. For every customer’s car hire, Green Motion donate £1.25 to deforestation projects in the Amazon Rainforest.

Newcastle Airport is the last of the 14 major UK airports for Green Motion to fill.

Will added: “Close to five million passengers go through Newcastle Airport every year and the new car hire branch will particularly appeal to environmentally conscious tourists as well as residents in the area.”
