Former Manchester cotton mill to become canalside aparthotel

Locke Hotels has announced plans for a design-led aparthotel in Manchester.

The scheme, Whitworth Locke, will overlook Rochdale Canal on the corner of Princess Street and Whitworth Street.

The development will include 160 units across a mix of 258 sq ft studios and one-bed suites, housed over three former cotton mill buildings.

New York architecture firm Grzywinski + Pons is providing designs for the project.

Alongside the residential units, Whitworth Locke will include co-working space, dining options, a cocktail bar, gym and apparel kiosk.

Locke Hotels has also struck a partnership with local organisation Foundation Coffee to oversee the complex’s coffee and cultural programme, which could include yoga, live music and film nights.

Eric Jafari, co-founder and creative director at Locke, said: “We believe that travellers are willing to compromise on a short stay but not necessarily for longer trips.

“They want an aspirational second home, and a home is so much more than a place to rest your head.”

He added: “We believe that everyone’s home is defined by a combination of their community and daily habits.”

Whitworth Locke will open in October.
