HOUSEBUILDER’S DONATION GETS VILLAGE HALL EXTENSION ON TRACK

Residents of Thornton in Craven are set to benefit from an improved village hall, thanks to a £1,000 donation from a housebuilder.

The Thornton in Craven Village Hall has received the donation from Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire as part of its Community Champions scheme.

The village hall committee has been actively fundraising for an extension to its current premises creating an additional room, disabled toilets, village library and new kitchen.

The lack of a village pub, shop or post office has meant that the village hall has become a valuable asset to the community.

Steven Briggs from the Thornton in Craven Village Hall management committee, said: “We are overjoyed to have received Persimmon’s donation - it finally means we can proceed with our extension plans.

“The village hall is such an important asset to the community. We already provide a very active calendar of events but the extension not only means we can increase our services, but a bigger hall means that we can cater for larger groups.

“When the extension is completed our hall will be accessible to even more residents, no longer will disabled, less active individuals or families with prams be dissuaded from attending our many activities.”

Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire gave the cash to the village hall committee after they applied for the housing firm’s Community Champion scheme. The initiative is a national programme where local community groups and clubs, charities and other good causes can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves.

Simon Whalley, sales director for Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “It’s projects like this that are exactly what our Community Champions initiative was created for – bringing the local communities together.

“We are delighted to be able to get this community project underway.”
