Civil engineering company celebrates decade of gold standard health and safety
A leading civil engineering firm has praised its employees after winning a prestigious health and safety award for the 10th time in a row.
Ruthin-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is to be presented with a President’s Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
The prize, presented on June 19 in London, acknowledges Jones Bros’ successful protection of its now 360-strong workforce for a decade.
During that time, the company has revamped its health and safety procedures to assist employees when reporting accidents and issues.
As part of the family firm’s behavioural approach to health and safety, Jones Bros introduced a ‘Together Safer’ pledge, which encourages all staff to take personal ownership of health and safety.
The programme’s goal is to create a universal approach to health and safety where any member of staff can raise issues with confidence.
As part of ‘Together Safer’, bespoke forms were developed to use in a mobile app, allowing all personnel on-site to report unsafe acts & conditions, but also to report the positive things in the workplace and this can be done at the touch of a button.
Today, 90 per cent of reports come via the app and workers are frequently asked for their views on health and safety performance.
Regular employee training is carried out, supported by a library of health and safety films shot on live Jones Bros sites.
Mike Mowbray, Jones Bros health and safety manager, said: “Winning the President’s Award is recognition of our workforce’s excellent health and safety awareness.
“Everyone at Jones Bros knows they have the power and knowledge to report a health and safety concern, no matter whether they’re an apprentice or director. It’s thanks to the efforts of all of our employees that we are able to win these awards.
“As a company we never sit still when it comes to the health and wellbeing of our employees, and we aim to continue improving our performance and standards and making it 20 years’ of RoSPA gold in 2028!”
Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of qualifications, awards and events, said: “The RoSPA Awards are the most highly-respected in the health and safety arena.
“With almost 2,000 entrants every year, they allow organisations to prove excellence in the workplace, demonstrating a commitment to the wellbeing of not only employees but all those who interact with it.”
