Housebuilder’s donation will help fund war memorial

A war memorial planned for Braunstone Civic Centre has been given a cash boost thanks to a regional housebuilder.

Persimmon Homes North Midlands has donated the £780 to help fund the cause as part of its Community Champions scheme.

Braunstone Community Life, a selection of local groups and individuals, applied for the funding to help create a poppy cascade and war memorial garden to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

The cascade will hang from the roof of Braunstone Civic Centre and will be formed of 14,177 hand-crafted poppies, each representing a Leicestershire man killed in the war. Lin Burrows, group member who applied for the funding, said: “The memorial is for the victims of all wars. On November 7th there will be a dedication service for the memorial and a parade on November 11th.

“Persimmon Homes’ kind donation will purchase the mesh needed to house the hand-crafted poppies – it will also help towards the overall day.

“This event will be spectacular and one where the whole community will come together to pay tribute to the Leicestershire men killed at war. We’re so very grateful to Persimmon Homes North Midlands for the support.”

The company’s Community Champions initiative sees the housebuilder donate up to £2,000 a month to good causes across the north Midlands.

This also happens across Persimmon’s other 29 operating areas, with up to £60,000 handed out every single month, and more than £2 million donated since the scheme started back in 2015.

Nadine O’Dowd, sales director for Persimmon Homes North Midlands, said: “We are committed to supporting the communities in which we are building, and the Community Champions initiative is just one way in which we do that.

“It is lovely to see so many members of the community coming together to organise this tribute – and what a touching tribute it will be. We’re honoured to be supporting this cause.”
