Plans approved for £5.7m housing development in Barnsley

Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association (LYHA) has revealed plans for dozens of new homes in Barnsley.

LYHA secured planning consent for 54 affordable properties in the middle of an existing housing estate in Athersley South, next to Athersley South Primary School.

The £5.7m development, part funded by a £2m Homes England grant, will deliver eight apartments, six bungalows and 40 houses.

Five of the homes will be available for shared ownership and the rest affordable rent.

Leeds-based architecture practice Acanthus WSM designed the scheme. Engie is the appointed construction company.

Joanna Chambers, head of home and growth at LYHA, said: “I am delighted that we have now received planning permission and purchased the land and I can’t wait to see the homes begin to take shape.

“The architect has created a design which we’re all excited to see come to fruition and I’m sure the new homes will prove very popular with local people.”

Mark Pearson, LYHA’s interim chief exec, commented: “We are delighted to be building more high quality, affordable housing in this area.

“Great care has been taken in the plans to ensure that the new homes will blend in with the surrounding area and I’m sure they will look fantastic. We have a great partnership with Barnsley Council and I am excited to be working together once again.”

Once completed in Autumn 2019, the homes will bring the total owned and managed by LYHA to more than 1,500.
