Construction to start on Middlesbrough’s 210,000 sq ft Centre Square scheme
Work on the mixed-use Centre Square project in Middlesbrough is progressing into the next stage of development.
Hoardings are now installed around the site and a 14-month build programme is due to start in the coming weeks.
Ashall Projects, the developer behind Centre Square, secured planning permission for the 210,000 sq ft project in May last year.
Comprising a mix of Grade A office accommodation and leisure space, the development will see bars and restaurants operating alongside the MIMA art gallery and the site’s new Holiday Inn Express.
Ashall Projects is working with Middlesbrough Council to create a flagship scheme for the town that will house up to 1,500 employees, generating an estimated £1m in business rates annually.
The office space will be built in phases. Full planning permission is in place for the first stage and outline permission for the second.
Ashall Projects director Mark Ashall: “Our aim is to create a new distinctive commercial hub at the cultural and civic heart of Middlesbrough which is integrated with high quality public realm, green space and local amenities – a desirable place to work, visit and relax.
“We are really pleased to be working with our partners to deliver the scheme and look forward to work commencing on-site.”
He added: “We will be working closely with the construction team and local community groups to operate a community involvement scheme throughout the build programme.”
Dave Budd, Mayor of Middlesbrough, commented: “This project will be transformative for our city centre, bringing jobs and opportunities in the heart of Middlesbrough and it is fantastic to see the reality as physical site preparations begin.
“We are about to enter a very exciting chapter in Middlesbrough’s history in terms of the developments being brought forward and this is a crucial part of our city-scale ambitions.”
