Clegg Gifford and Westminster Insurance celebrate double anniversary

Two of the UK’s most established insurance firms are this year celebrating landmark anniversaries, four years after they joined forces.

Clegg Gifford, a leading national broker specialising in the motor trade and commercial insurance products, is celebrating 50 years since its founding.

Westminster Insurance, a nationwide network of appointed a taxi and commercial vehicle insurance representatives, is celebrating 70 years of business.

Clegg Gifford was originally founded in Ilford, Essex as a general broker, specialising in the motor trade. Today, as a Lloyd’s broker, it employs over 200 staff and operates a wholesale network of over 800 brokers across the UK.

The family business is run by Toby Clegg, son of the company’s co-founder, Roy Clegg, and prides itself on its strong relationship with direct customers. The firm handles the motor, commercial, household, travel, marine, cargo and taxi and various other policies of over 55,000 policyholders.

Over the last 50 years, the broker has brokered insurance for numerous quirky vehicles and unusual risks, including aqua ducks, a trike hearse, cherry pickers and even an air show.

Earlier this year, the London Stock Exchange included Clegg Gifford in its list of 100 companies to inspire Britain – a celebratory list of the fastest-growing and most dynamic SMEs in Europe.

Westminster Insurance was founded as a mutual insurer by taxi drivers, for taxi drivers. The taxi industry continues to be a core component of its DNA, and today provides products through its national network of appointed representatives located throughout the UK.

Each appointed representative, many of who are second or third generation family businesses, is linked to a specific geographical area across the UK, ensuring a local undertaking of the market in each specific region.

In 2014 Clegg Gifford purchased Westminster Insurance as a means of increasing the breadth of facilitates and products that Westminster Insurance appointed representatives could offer their clients.

Today the two companies operate a branch office network in Romford, Guernsey, Jersey, Edinburgh, Peterborough, Minories (City of London), Cannock and Wakefield, as well as the wider network of brokers and local agents across the UK.

Toby Clegg, CEO of Clegg Gifford, said:

“It is with immense pride that we celebrate these two anniversaries.

“Over the last fifty years both companies have flourished into industry leaders - yet remained committed to serving their local communities and maintaining a loyal, direct relationship with their customers.

“In the coming years we look forward to growing our approved network of brokers and appointed representatives, diversifying our product offerings, and continuing to rise to the challenges posed by an ever-changing industry.”
