Caulmert wins contract with Wales and West Housing for extra-care facility

A North Wales-based engineering, environmental and planning consultancy has been awarded a contract to work on a new extra care facility in Holywell.

St Asaph-based Caulmert will carry out full civil, structural and geotechnical engineering services for the £8.5M development.

The three-storey steel-framed building is the second extra care scheme in Flintshire for Wales & West Housing, and the 55-bed development will be built on the site of a former primary school in Holywell.

Caulmert was appointed by Wales and West Housing two years ago on a consultancy basis, and will migrate to work under construction company Anwyl Construction for the remainder of the scheme.

Peter Dawson, associate director of structural engineering at Caulmert, said: “We’re looking forward to working with Wales & West Housing and Anwyl on this exciting project.

“We have been engaged by the client to work from concept to completion. We expect to be on site later this year, with the build time scheduled to last for 18 months.

“The project will test our skills and expertise due to poor ground conditions, which require piled foundations. In addition, the site is located close to sensitive woodland and space is tight for moving and operating construction plant.

“We will adopt BIM behaviours across the project teams for design, development and coordination, which will allow for any clashes in the design to be identified before construction work begins.”

BIM allows designers and constructors to work collaboratively to streamline and accurately model a construction project before work starts on site.

The firm, whose projects span the UK, from the Hebrides to the Isle of Wight, counts among its clients Willmott Dixon, Stoke City FC, Wynne Construction, TGI Fridays, Viridor, and Airbus.

Its expertise in a variety of planning, environmental and engineering projects is supported by the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes and modelling to meet PAS1192 level 2.
