Plans submitted for new Lidl-anchored retail scheme in Darlington

Plans have been submitted for the development of three retail buildings in Faverdale, Darlington.

The anchor tenant of the scheme is Lidl UK, which has agreed to take 22,873 sq ft of space.

A further 20,451 sq ft of retail space has been taken by Home Bargains and 1,797 sq ft will be developed in to a Starbucks Coffee drive-through unit, making it the first in Darlington.

Once complete, the new scheme will create around 85 jobs and provide parking spaces for up to 263 cars and 30 bicycles.

The three buildings are expected to comprise the initial phase of the development of the entire 10-acre site, which has the potential to be developed into future retail, leisure or mixed-use.

Hansteen, the industrial property investor, submitted the planning application to Darlington Borough Council. Subject to planning approvals, construction of the first buildings will begin in early 2019.

Derek Heathwood, UK property director at Hansteen, said: “Submission of our planning application marks a key milestone in the delivery of a much needed retail scheme at Faverdale.

“This development will provide significant economic and social benefits to the local community.”

David Murphy, Lidl UK’s regional head of property, commented: “We are delighted to be opening a second store in Darlington, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

“We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers in and around Faverdale very soon.”
