Staff show they have an appetite for supporting charity
Staff at a North East law firm have shown they have a strong appetite for supporting charity after donating provisions to a church foodbank.
The collection of food, toiletries, clothing and toys by staff at BHP Law offices across the region will go towards the 120 food parcels supplied each week to needy families by the King’s Church Foodbank, in Whessoe Road.
Leanne Nash, a partner at BHP Law and leader of the corporate and commercial team, put the idea forward to staff.
Emily Charlton, of BHP Law, explained: “We do a number of activities to support charity, but this opportunity was suggested because it’s particularly local.
“The team clearly got behind It and we are very pleased with their response. The firm also put some money towards it so we could go out and buy items to add to the collection.
“It’s been really rewarding for colleagues to do something that will benefit local families.”
The donations were collected from BHP Law in Darlington by staff from Darlington Cares, which works with the King’s Church in its community efforts, and is encouraging more businesses to get involved in volunteering to support projects that address need in the town.
Darlington Cares coordinates support for community projects by linking organisations that need help with its 29 member businesses whose staff offer time, skills and expertise in the areas of education, environment and social justice.
Director of Darlington Cares Seth Pearson said: “It’s fantastic what the staff at BHP Law have been doing and hopefully rewarding for them, but it also addresses a town problem by supporting families in need.”
Programme officer Chelsea Johnson added: “The foodbanks are always in need but particularly struggle at this time of year. Donations like this really make a difference.”
