Sainsbury's sees major profit slump over summer months compared to big four supermarkets
According to industry data, Sainsbury’s has been the worst performer of the big four supermarkets in the latest three months.
Sainsbury’s is Britain’s second biggest supermarket, and agreed a £7.3bn takeover of number three player Asda earlier this year.
According to market researcher, Kantar Worldpanel, the business saw growth of 1.2 per cent in the 12 weeks to August 12, 2018.
That trailed the growth of 2.6 per cent delivered by Asda, 1.8 per cent at Tesco and 2.7 per cent at number four, Morrisons.
Furthermore, the growth of branded products has outstripped that of own label lines for the first time since May 2015, figures suggest.
Elsewhere, the data shows Co-op experienced its fastest rate of growth in nearly seven years. The last time Co-op saw sales growth of 7.8 per cent, it was reportedly benefiting from Somerfield’s acquisition.
The retailer also saw the average customer visit 22 times over the 12-week period, contributing to a market share increase of 0.3 percentage points to 6.6 per cent.
To conclude, with growth up 2.7 per cent, Morrisons regained its position as the fastest-growing of the big four supermarkets.
