Interserve to lead £4.6m indoor market refurbishment in Scunthorpe
International support services and construction firm Interserve has won a £4.6m contract to refurbish Scunthorpe’s indoor market.
Work on the newly named St John’s Market, which is spread over three floors, will begin in autumn this year and form part of a £60m regeneration project aimed at reshaping the town.
Once finished, the site is expected to have extra ground-floor retail space, as well as new seating and storage areas, refrigerated counters, additional stalls and a new first-floor space for food outlets.
Interserve said the project will help to safeguard and create up to 90 construction jobs, as well as provide apprentice, training and work experience opportunities in various roles.
In winning the contract, it has also committed to using local workers and suppliers wherever possible, including Scunthorpe Steel.
Interserve’s divisional director, John Gittins, emphasised the firm’s commitment to helping the local community.
He said: “As a North Lincolnshire resident, I am really excited to be involved with this important local project and the ongoing redevelopment of Scunthorpe town centre.
“We have a strong local supply chain, but will look to maximise social value outcomes, as well as ensuring a business as usual environment for all existing businesses within the town centre.”
Adding to this, local councillor Rob Waltham urged locals to continue visiting the market at its current location near St John’s Church Square, confirming that it will stay open until the new space is completed “in the new year”.
