Miller Homes helps Northumberland children achieve top marks for health and safety

School children in Northumberland have benefitted from important lessons in health and safety ahead of the summer break thanks to Miller Homes.

The leading housebuilder is working with Red Row County First School in Morpeth to help educate youngsters about general health and safety as well as the importance of staying safe near construction sites.

As part of the initiative children from the school, which is near to Miller Homes’ Shoreland Park development in Hadston, enjoyed a health and safety session from Tony Haigh, one of the company’s regional safety, health and environment (SHE) advisors.

During the visit Tony gave a presentation on general health and safety, as well as getting the children involved with some fun and interactive activities, including a spot the sign quiz and the chance to dress up in PPE (personal protective equipment), wearing high visibility jackets, hard hats, ear defenders and protective gloves.

Following the session, some of the children will be invited to Shoreland Park in the new school year to further their learning on health and safety during a special tour of the development.

Andrew Somerville, associate sales director at Miller Homes North East, said: “Health and safety is a top priority for us so ahead of the school breaking up for summer, we wanted to take the opportunity to provide some guidance to children living close to our Shoreland Park development.

“During a fun and interactive session Red Row pupils were able to develop an understanding of the importance of health and safety in everyday life, just in time for the summer holidays when they will be spending more time playing outdoors.

“It’s very important to us that we work closely with the local communities in which we operate, and following the assembly look forward to welcoming a selection of pupils to Shoreland Park for a visit.”

Mr Bollands, head teacher at Red Row County First School, added: “We were pleased to welcome Tony from Miller Homes to teach our pupils all about health and safety; vital lessons for children of all ages. I’m grateful that the children are heading into their summer holidays with a heightened awareness of health and safety and what is around them.”
