MP meets MP

As part of his campaign to meet with each of this region’s MPs to gain support for the environment ahead of forthcoming Brexit decisions, Mike Pratt, Chief Executive of Northumberland Wildlife Trust has met with his first Member of Parliament.

At a time of so much uncertainty and risk in terms of wildlife protection and support for the environment, Mike was delighted to meet with Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell at East Cramlington Pond - one of Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s smaller reserves.

Created on part of a former brickworks site, East Cramlington Pond, which lies between East Cramlington and Seaton Delaval is a haven for wetland plants and creatures including toads and toadlets in their thousands, dragonflies, damselflies and birds such as moorhen and more recently, woodland birds, which are now taking up residence in the scrub woodland.

As a chief executive campaigning for the future of wildlife, Mike was delighted to see that Mr Campbell was not only aware of the pressures on the environment but that he had contributed to the House of Commons debate and influenced decisions towards the positive outcomes being sought.

Also on the agenda was the need for vulnerable local wildlife sites (many of which lie on private land) to receive protection from the current planning system, the last of three rounds of consultation to establish a network of Marine Conservation Zones and their hope to add special protection along the Northumberland Coast for the declining eider duck aka, the ‘Cuddy Duck’ which is named after St Cuthbert.
