Heathcotes launches pod development initiative

Care provider, Heathcotes Group, is rolling out a new development initiative across its estates with the construction of gardens pods providing new self-contained space for residents to use.

The first pod has been completed at Heathcotes Larkrise in South London, one of the company’s specialist residential services for adults who have Autism, complex learning disabilities and associated challenging behaviour. Designed by Heathcotes’ in-house architectural consultancy, JDS Design, the accommodation includes kitchenette, lounge, bedroom, toilet and shower room, private patio area and garden space. The company has earmarked the construction of three more pods at various services in the southern England and four more at various services across northern England and the Midlands, subject to planning permission.

Rebecca Wright, Heathcotes’ Senior Commissioning Manager, explained the thinking behind the pods:

“The pods are designed for single occupancy, with the option to socialise with other service users should they wish to, and they serve two main purposes. Firstly, they will be available for people who are leaving our services and require more of a supported-living setting. Secondly, they are available for individuals that are going through a crisis and require a solo environment with a view to transitioning into a larger home in the future. The first pod at Larksrise has really enhanced the internal and external space of the site, from both a functional and an aesthetic perspective, and we are delighted with the results.”

Dean Gregory of JDS Design described the design and construction: “The pods are prefabricated out of insulated SIP panels which are then clad with a decorative and protective cedar boarding. This, in conjunction with a single ply roof membrane and superior quality uPVC double-glazing, results in a lightweight building which exceeds the required thermal insulation standards required by Building Regulations. The proportions of our first pod, in conjunction with the dark grey window frames and over-hanging flat roof, have resulted in a contemporary pavilion designed to sit comfortably within the garden environment at Larkrise. I know that the Larkrise residents have been impressed with new pod and they have been making good use of the space.”
