Caulmert ascends to new heights with Government contract win

A growing engineering, environmental and planning consultancy has secured a Government contract to work more than 4,000 miles away from its Bangor and St Asaph offices.

Caulmert will undertake the role of independent certifier to assist in the management of the installation of an incinerator on Ascension Island for the Ascension Island Government.

The incinerator, once operational,will manage the majority of the island’s waste and it has the capacity to cope with the current projected population for the next 20 years.

The incinerator will be built in the UK and cold commissioned, which is the process of testing it without waste, before it is disassembled and shipped off on a 4,137-mile journey from Southampton to Ascension Island.

On the island, Caulmert, will set to work with a team of contractors to re-build the facility. Once completed this will then be hot commissioned, which is testing it in a live environment with actual waste.

Ascension Island, which has a population of approximately 800 people, is located in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean approximately 1,000 miles from Africa and 1,400 miles from South America.

The project is funded by the Darwin Initiative, a UK government grant scheme that helps protect biodiversity and natural environments worldwide.

Ian Crofts, Caulmert’s Director of Environmental Services said: “We’re excited to be working on this project for the Ascension Island Government to assist them in achieving their environmental targets”.

“Part of our role is the quality assurance of the packing of the shipping containers to adhere with the strict international shipping requirements including ensuring the containers are stable in transit. We will also assist in protecting the island’s biodiversity and the habitat, the flora and fauna, by ensuring seeds, animals and soil etc. from a foreign land do not enter the Ascension Island environment.”

Caulmert has been appointed by Ascension Island under a NEC Professional Services Contract.

Mike Haworth, the Ascension Island Government’s project manager commented, “We are very pleased to be partnering with Caulmert on the installation of Ascension’s new incinerator, with their support in the UK and here locally, we will deliver this key infrastructure that will ensure responsible waste management on this small island for the long term.”

Founded in 2009, employee-owned Caulmert also has offices in Maidstone, Nottingham, and Altrincham.

The firm, whose projects span the UK, from the Hebrides to the Isle of Wight, counts among its clients Willmott Dixon, Stoke City FC, Wynne Construction, TGI Fridays, Viridor, and Airbus.
