Casual Japanese dining concept to launch on Soho’s Old Compton Street

A new Japanese dining concept is coming to Soho.

Leisure operator Robatayaki has signed a deal for a 1,162 sq ft space at 56 Old Compton Street, where it will debut its flagship restaurant.

The venue’s interiors and menu will take inspiration from the style and art of ‘izakaya’, a form of casual Japanese dining.

Robatayaki’s new restaurant will feature an open plan kitchen and bar at the rear, where diners will see chefs barbecuing skewers on a traditional robata grill. Its menu will focus on small plates and tapas, including fresh sushi, yuzu clams, torched oysters and honey soy fillet.

A Robatayaki spokesperson said: “Old Compton Street was the only choice when it came to a decision on where Robatayaki should be situated in the West End.

“The eclectic mix of dining and nightlife makes this the perfect venue to create a collaboration of Japanese food, sake and music.”

They added: “We are sure it will be a destination that will delight hungry crowds of locals and tourists alike.”

Advisory firm CDG Leisure secured the space on behalf of Robatayaki.

CDG’s Emma Cousins and Tom Crosthwaite, who brokered the deal, commented: “Robatayaki will be a brilliant addition to the wonderful eating and dining offer that Soho is known for.

“It meets the growing demand for premium casual restaurants that deliver authentic food in a fun, attractive setting.”

They continued: “Diners are sure to enjoy unparalleled quality in the restaurant’s interpretations of modern Japanese cuisine.”

The restaurant is due to open in February 2019.
