Turn back time: Housebuilder hosts magical history lesson for local Primary School

Local housebuilder Barratt Homes North East has teamed up with a local historian to host a Magical Mystery History talk at its new Jubilee Gardens development in Stockton-On-Tees.

Martin Peagam, a Time Traveller, imparted his historical knowledge with the Year Five pupils of Tillery Primary School, as he shared tales about the history of Norton Road where the Jubilee Gardens development now sits, in a Magical Mystery History talk which took place on the site itself.

The children of Tillery Primary School were taught all about the Fossick and Hackworth railway engine works, which built over fifty railway locomotives in the nineteenth century, the Blairs Works, which made engines for ships, including some that were destined to take part in the American Civil War, and F Hills and Sons Ltd, which during the Second World War made vital parts for aircraft such as the Mosquito. After the factory’s demolition in the early 2000s, the space was cleared and has been disused until the construction began on the site in late 2016.

Martin Peagam said: “It was a great joy to teach the pupils of Tillery Primary School about the local history of this site. The children seemed to really enjoy the session. I was particularly delighted to see so many raised hands when I asked questions, and was pleased that when I sought to reinforce the learning by asking them to get involved, they did so readily! The Jubilee Gardens development site holds rich history and an important story about wartime Britain, and I’d like to thank Barratt Homes for giving us the chance to come and tell this story to our younger generation.”

Tracy Clark-McCabe, Sales Manager at Jubilee Gardens commented: “It was brilliant to have Martin and Tillery Primary School at Jubilee Gardens. We’re so pleased to have a strong connection with our local community and we hope to work with Tillery Primary School again in the future. We’d like to thank Martin for holding such a great talk for the pupils, and for bringing history to life here.”
