John's 85 Years Not Out
At 85 years old, John Wilkinson, from Longridge, has finally decided to retire.
His story is quite amazing; he started work as an apprentice motor mechanic, at 15 years old, on 3rd January 1949 at Dunderdale & Yates, Preston, working a 48 hour week, he earnt just 9 shillings, 45p a week in today’s money.
John completed his apprenticeship and continued working as a qualified mechanic, until some years later, due to health reasons, he moved into the Stores, which these days would be known as the Parts Department. Over the years the company changed ownership many times, but John remained, taking on a Quality Systems role whilst still assisting with Parts.
Eventually the business was taken over by Thompson Motor Company and John turned his attention to the Audi HSO program, ensuring that that not only Preston Audi, but also Blackburn and Carlisle Audi, were complying with Audi UK quality assurance.
John helped out in the Parts Departments at all the sites too and when the centres were bought by Swansway Motor Group, John continued in his important role.
After 70 working years, 64 of them with one business, as it changed through the years, John has finally decided he’s earnt a little rest and relaxation time.
Head of Business at Preston Audi, Steve Rowley, commented, “John is the very essence of loyalty; he has worked hard and been totally committed throughout his working life and is a truly wonderful gentleman, who will be much missed by all of us at Preston Audi. I hope he thoroughly enjoys his retirement.”
The directors of the family firm presented John with a cheque and Garden Centre vouchers for him to enjoy now he has time to focus on his beloved garden.
