Leeds firms to deliver Roomzzz hotels in York and Newcastle worth £20m

Two Leeds businesses are working on new Roomzzz hotels in Yorkshire and the North East with a combined value of around £20m.

Adept Consulting Engineers and building firm The Broadley Group are delivering the schemes in York and Newcastle city centre, with Adept providing civil and structural engineering services and Broadley on board as principal contractor.

The York site, located off Terry Avenue on the banks of the Ouse and Foss rivers, will comprise 97 rooms across four storeys, including a luxury penthouse and several duplexes on its upper floors. It will also feature a gym and café.

The project includes improved flood defences, reinforcing a flood wall at the end of Lower Ebor Street. Further, the hotel will sit on a podium slab that raises it four metres above ground level as an added precaution.

The other development will expand the existing 14-apartment Roomzzz hotel in Newcastle with an additional 74 rooms.

The six-storey extension will occupy the converted Friar House and incorporate a link between the two distinctive buildings, which will also share a new lounge and café.

Adept’s Jonathan Ashton commented: “Both these hotels are located in city centre locations that create challenges due to the limited access.

“As a result we’ve used piled foundations and also incorporated innovative cross-laminated timber superstructures into both buildings.”

He added: “These use prefabricated panels that are quick to install, have great environmental credentials and require far less deliveries to site, compared to what would be needed for a traditional steel frame.”

Paul Manku from The Broadley Group said of the projects: “We’re delighted to be playing a major part in these hotels as they start to take shape.

“Both are located in prime city centre locations and rather than simply rolling out a standard design, like so many other hotel operators can do, Roomzzz will create two completely bespoke buildings that are specifically designed to be sympathetic to their surroundings.”

Roomzzz’ expanded Newcastle venue will open in June 2019 and the York site in July.
