Northumberland primary school celebrates Road Safety Week with special event hosted by North Sea Link

As activity around the construction of the new North Sea Link Interconnector ramps up, the project team responsible for the multi-billion euro subsea pipeline has hosted a road safety event at Cambois Primary School to coincide with National Road Safety Week.

As work on the Interconnector Project is now entering a crucial phase of development, North Sea Link decided to hold a fun-packed activity day for its 65 pupils to educate them about the importance of being aware when walking or playing near busy roadsides.

“We had a fantastic day at Cambois Primary School for Road Safety Week,” said Sallyanne Barson, communications manager at North Sea Link.

“The day started with an all-school assembly where the project team talked to the children about the danger of roads and general road safety. We then split the pupils up into different groups so they could make their way around various work stations to participate in games and activities, including a safety-themed colouring competition for which we awarded four of the children with prizes, which would help teach them more about the different aspects of road safety.

“One of our contractors, ABB, brought one of their vehicles along to the school so we could explain to the children about blind spots. We were also lucky enough to be joined by police officers from Bedlington Police Station who reiterated the importance of staying safe near busy roads.”

The children were all presented with their own high visibility jackets and wristbands to wear on their journeys to and from school during the dark winter months.

Marianne Allan, head teacher at Cambois Primary School, said:

“We’re very grateful to North Sea Link for the time and effort that they put into organising the road safety event.

“Cambois is a small village so the children aren’t necessarily accustomed to seeing large vehicles on the roads or high volumes of traffic. The event was really engaging and informative and provided the children with lots of practical information about road safety which will be useful as the Interconnector project continues into the New Year.”

The North Sea Link Interconnector is a joint project between Statnett and National Grid who are working together to construct a subsea electricity link designed to trade excess energy between Norway and the UK. North Sea Link will connect the two countries from Kvilldal in Norway to Blyth, with onshore infrastructure located at Cambois.

Passing through Norwegian and British waters, North Sea Link will be operational in 2021 and will be the longest subsea interconnector in the world.
