Hebburn set for Olympic glory with 16,000 sq ft sports facility
Plans for a new 16,000 sq ft sports centre could spell Olympic glory for one South Tyneside town.
A former industrial facility in Hebburn is set to become a hub for cheer-leading and parkour, both of which could soon be included in the Olympics, on the back of a deal secured by property agency Naylors.
The Community Network (NE) CiC will create 15 jobs by transforming unit six on Victoria Industrial Estate into a drop-in community sports centre featuring a competition-size cheer floor, seven-panel sprung floor, two tumble tracks, a gymnastics floor and a bespoke free-running park.
The venue, owned by landlord BizSpace, will also house childcare facilities and a café.
Duncan Christie, surveyor in industrial agency at Naylors, said: “We’ve been proud to be able to secure a lease for this well-located unit that is set to have a huge number of benefits for the local community as the region’s first facility dedicated to urban sports, including additional jobs for up to 15 people.”
The project is supported by Sport England and Virgin Money. BizSpace has helped the Community Network (NE) CiC by supporting the change of use application and preparing the industrial unit for its transformation.
Community Network (NE) CiC director Rachel Lynch commented: “We chose the unit here in Hebburn due to its size and location, and Naylors has helped support the process from the very start.
“Duncan and his team allowed access to the building numerous times, and provided efficient communication between myself and the landlord.”
She added: “Hebburn is a thriving community with many new families coming into the area. It is an ideal place to create a community hub for physical activity.”
