Scheme to turn Hull housing estate into ‘vibrant commercial and residential hub’

South Yorkshire developer Priority Space is set to deliver a multi-million pound mixed-use retail scheme near Hull.

Work has started on 10 new retail units along Wawne Road, between North Bransholme and Kingswood, that will house a convenience store, vet practice, pharmacy, bakery and a family restaurant.

The £2.5m development will also include a nursery, two new public parks and an extension for nearby Broadacre Primary School.

The project stems from a partnership between the Hull City Council and property consortium KSHP, which comprises Keepmoat; Strata Homes; Persona, part of Home Group; and Priority Space.

The KSHP-council partnership plans to deliver 1,660 new homes on Wawne Road. Work on phase one, which will create 747 homes, is well underway.

Adam Richardson, co-director at Barnsley-based Priority Space, said: “We have worked closely with our KSHP partners and Hull City Council to design Wawne Road to meet the needs and requirements of the local community.

“We are committed to creating high-quality, sustainable retail and commercial spaces and are delighted to bring a variety of national and local brands to the area with a range of shops, food outlets and facilities for local people.”

He added: “Working with our partners, our aim is to be an integral part of the success of the regeneration of Kingswood.”

The new units are due for completion in May 2019.

Wawne Road was identified as a strategic housing site in the council’s economic vision for the city. It is part of the Kingswood Area Action Plan, put together in 2016 to provide new housing, retail and leisure facilities for the area.

Cllr John Black, who is responsible for housing at Hull City Council, commented: “With the start of construction we are seeing yet again how the council is spurring economic activity at a local level.

“This project is an integral part of the continued growth in the area, transforming the area into a vibrant commercial and residential hub, jobs will be created and retained, and it is this investment in our people that will continue to push the area forward.”

The team behind the Kingswood development includes contractor Hobson & Porter and property consultancies Garness Jones and Barnsdales.
